At the edge of disciplines – planetary geology and volcanology at the Institute of Geology AMU

At the edge of disciplines – planetary geology and volcanology at the Institute of Geology AMU

During the latest scientific joint meeting organized on the 5th of November 2025 by the Institute of Geology of Adam Mickiewicz University (AMU) in Poznań and the Poznań Branch of the Polish Geological Society, Dr. Bartosz Pieterek, principal investigator of the MARIVEL project, gave a lecture on the latest research on the evolution of volcanism on Mars.

During the presentation, the results of earlier scientific research were presented, which directly inspired the creation and development of the MARIVEL project. Participants of the meeting also had the opportunity to learn about the first results of the research obtained within the project, including analyses of geological structures and processes occurring on the surface of the Red Planet.

The lecture was not only an overview of the research team’s achievements to date, but also an excellent opportunity to promote the MARIVEL project within the scientific community of the Faculty of Geographical and Geological Sciences at AMU. Dr. Pieterek also announced that two annual research scholarships are planned as part of the project, aimed at people interested in Martian geology. These scholarships will focus on solving specific research problems addressed in the MARIVEL project, giving young scientists the opportunity to participate in international research on planetary geology.

The meeting attracted considerable interest among both researchers and students at the Faculty of Geographical and Geological Sciences at AMU, confirming the growing importance of planetary research in contemporary Earth and space sciences.
