Międzynarodowa konferencja organizowana w ramach International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) przyciągnęła nad Jezioro Genewskie szerokie grono naukowców, którzy spotkali się na Uniwersytecie Genewskim w dniach od 29 czerwca do 4 lipca, aby zaprezentować wyniki swoich badań nad aktywnością wulkaniczną. Konferencja odbyła się pod hasłem „The energies of magma: From volcanic eruptions and mineral resources to geothermal production and sustainability”, co podkreślało interdyscyplinarne podejście łączące badania nad erupcjami wulkanicznymi z potencjalnym wykorzystaniem zasobów powiązanych z tą aktywnością.

W programie znalazły się liczne sesje naukowe i posterowe, prezentujące nowoczesne badania nad dynamiką systemów magmowych, modelowaniem spływów piroklastycznych, monitoringiem wulkanicznym oraz innymi kluczowymi zagadnieniami związanymi z aktywnością magmową i wulkaniczną. W ramach szerokiego zakresu prezentowanych tematów zaplanowano również sesję planetarną pod nazwą „Volcanism across the Solar System”. Obejmowała ona badania nad wulkanizmem na innych ciałach niebieskich. W jej ramach dr inż. Bartosz Pieterek zaprezentował poster przedstawiający wyniki dokumentujące obecność wałów bryzgowych w prowincji wulkanicznej Tharsis na Marsie, które powstały w późnym amazonie w wyniku umiarkowanie eksplozywnych erupcji wulkanów rozproszonych. Rezultaty tych badań zostały opublikowane w czasopiśmie Communications Earth & Environment (https://doi.org/10.1038/s43247-024-01697-w) i stanowiły podstawę założeń do stworzenia projektu MARIVEL, finansowanego przez Narodowe Centrum Nauki w ramach programu OPUS.

Bogaty program naukowy, w połączeniu z sesjami posterowymi, sprzyjał nawiązywaniu kontaktów, dyskusjom i wymianie doświadczeń — równie gorących, jak fala upałów, która nawiedziła Genewę podczas konferencji.

The international conference organized by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) brought together a wide range of scientists to the shores of Lake Geneva. From June 29 to July 4, they gathered at the University of Geneva to present their findings on volcanic activity. The theme of the conference — “The energies of magma: From volcanic eruptions and mineral resources to geothermal production and sustainability” — emphasized an interdisciplinary approach, combining research on volcanic eruptions with the potential utilization of volcanic-related resources.

The program included numerous scientific and poster sessions featuring cutting-edge research on magmatic system dynamics, modeling of pyroclastic flows, volcanic monitoring, and other key issues related to magmatic and volcanic activity. Among the broad range of topics, a planetary session titled “Volcanism across the Solar System” focused on research concerning volcanic processes on other celestial bodies.

During this session, Dr. Eng. Bartosz Pieterek presented a poster highlighting emerging results that document the presence of spatter ramparts in the Tharsis volcanic province on Mars. These features were formed during late Amazonian volcanic activity, attributed to mildly explosive eruptions from distributed volcanoes. The results were recently published in Communications Earth & Environment (https://doi.org/10.1038/s43247-024-01697-w), and served as the foundation and inspiration for the MARIVEL project, which has received funding under the OPUS program of the National Science Center of Poland. The rich scientific programme, combined with poster sessions, encouraged networking, discussions, and the exchange of experiences — all as intense as the heat wave that struck Geneva during the conference.
