Udział zespołu MARIVEL – projektu finansowanego przez Narodowe Centrum Nauki – w EGU General Assembly 2026 w Wiedniu był ważnym elementem upowszechniania wyników badań oraz promocji projektu na arenie międzynarodowej.

W programie konferencji znalazły się wystąpienia członków zespołu: poster Bartosza Pieterka pt. „When lava meets ice: Explosive eruptions in the late Amazonian in Tharsis, Mars” oraz prezentacja w formacie PICO Thomasa Jonesa pt. „Secondary pyroclastic cones created by syn-eruptive wind”. Wystąpienie Bartosza Pieterka promowało niedawno opublikowaną pracę dotyczącą erupcji freatomagmowych na Marsie, która ukazała się na łamach npj Space Exploration.

Obie formy prezentacji – poster oraz PICO – umożliwiły bezpośrednią dyskusję z uczestnikami konferencji, sprzyjając wymianie wiedzy i doświadczeń. The participation of the MARIVEL team—a project funded by the National Science Centre—at the EGU General Assembly 2026 in Vienna was an important step in disseminating research results and promoting the project on the international stage.

The conference program included presentations by team members: a poster by Bartosz Pieterek titled “When lava meets ice: Explosive eruptions in the late Amazonian in Tharsis, Mars” and a PICO presentation by Thomas Jones titled “Secondary pyroclastic cones created by syn-eruptive wind”. Bartosz Pieterek’s presentation promoted a recently published paper on phreatomagmatic eruptions on Mars, which appeared in npj Space Exploration.

Both presentation formats—posters and PICO—facilitated direct discussion with conference participants, fostering the exchange of knowledge and experiences. Participation in the event also provided an opportunity to establish new contacts and develop international cooperation, which is a key component of the MARIVEL project.

W dniach 23-25 października 2025 roku na Wydziale Fizyki, Astronomii i Informatyki Stosowanej Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego w Krakowie odbyła się Planetary Science Conference 2025 – jedno z najważniejszych wydarzeń w Polsce poświęconych badaniom planetarnym i eksploracji Układu Słonecznego. W konferencji uczestniczył dr inż. Bartosz Pieterek, kierownik projektu MARIVEL, finansowanego przez Narodowe Centrum Nauki.

Podczas konferencji dr Pieterek zaprezentował prezentację poświęconą projektowi MARIVEL, przedstawiając główne założenia badawcze oraz pierwsze wyniki uzyskane w początkowych miesiącach realizacji projektu. Celem wystąpienia było przybliżenie społeczności naukowej interdyscyplinarnego podejścia do analizy procesów wulkanicznych na Marsie, które są przedmiotem badań zespołu MARIVEL.

Dodatkowo zaprezentowany został poster naukowy prezentujący wyniki dotyczące nowego modelu trajektorii balistycznych udokumentowanych bomb wulkanicznych związanych ze stożkami wulkanicznymi w regionie Ceraunius Fossae na Marsie. Opracowany model stanowi ważny krok w zrozumieniu dynamiki erupcji wulkanicznych na Czerwonej Planecie oraz mechanizmów kształtowania się powierzchni marsjańskich stożków rozbryzgowych.

Udział w konferencji był niezwykle owocny – umożliwił wymianę doświadczeń z przedstawicielami krajowego środowiska naukowego zajmującego się badaniami planetarnymi, nawiązanie nowych kontaktów oraz dyskusję nad możliwościami współpracy w zakresie analiz geomorfologicznych i modelowania procesów geologicznych na Marsie.

Konferencja Planetary Science Conference 2025 potwierdziła rosnące znaczenie polskiej społeczności badaczy kosmosu oraz była doskonałą okazją do prezentacji wyników polskich projektów naukowych.

Space scientists visit Krakow – Planetary Science Conference 2025

On October 23–25, 2025, the Faculty of Physics, Astronomy and Applied Computer Science of the Jagiellonian University in Kraków hosted the Planetary Science Conference 2025 – one of the most important scientific events in Poland dedicated to planetary research and the exploration of the Solar System. The conference was attended by Dr. Bartosz Pieterek, principal investigator of the MARIVEL project, funded by the National Science Centre (NCN).

During the event, Dr. Pieterek delivered a presentation on the MARIVEL project, outlining its main research objectives and the initial results obtained during the first months of implementation. The presentation aimed to introduce the Polish planetary science community to the project’s interdisciplinary approach to analyzing volcanic processes on Mars — the primary focus of the MARIVEL research team.

In addition, a scientific poster was presented, showcasing the results of a new model of ballistic trajectories of documented volcanic bombs associated with volcanic cones in the Ceraunius Fossae region of Mars. The developed model represents an important step forward in understanding the dynamics of volcanic eruptions on the Red Planet and the mechanisms shaping the surfaces of Martian spatter cones.

Participation in the conference proved extremely fruitful — it enabled the exchange of experiences with representatives of the Polish planetary science community, the establishment of new research contacts, and fruitful discussions on potential collaborations in the field of geomorphological analysis and geological process modeling on Mars.

The Planetary Science Conference 2025 confirmed the growing significance of the Polish space research community and served as an excellent opportunity to present the achievements of Polish scientific projects such as MARIVEL.

Międzynarodowa konferencja organizowana w ramach International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) przyciągnęła nad Jezioro Genewskie szerokie grono naukowców, którzy spotkali się na Uniwersytecie Genewskim w dniach od 29 czerwca do 4 lipca, aby zaprezentować wyniki swoich badań nad aktywnością wulkaniczną. Konferencja odbyła się pod hasłem „The energies of magma: From volcanic eruptions and mineral resources to geothermal production and sustainability”, co podkreślało interdyscyplinarne podejście łączące badania nad erupcjami wulkanicznymi z potencjalnym wykorzystaniem zasobów powiązanych z tą aktywnością.

W programie znalazły się liczne sesje naukowe i posterowe, prezentujące nowoczesne badania nad dynamiką systemów magmowych, modelowaniem spływów piroklastycznych, monitoringiem wulkanicznym oraz innymi kluczowymi zagadnieniami związanymi z aktywnością magmową i wulkaniczną. W ramach szerokiego zakresu prezentowanych tematów zaplanowano również sesję planetarną pod nazwą „Volcanism across the Solar System”. Obejmowała ona badania nad wulkanizmem na innych ciałach niebieskich. W jej ramach dr inż. Bartosz Pieterek zaprezentował poster przedstawiający wyniki dokumentujące obecność wałów bryzgowych w prowincji wulkanicznej Tharsis na Marsie, które powstały w późnym amazonie w wyniku umiarkowanie eksplozywnych erupcji wulkanów rozproszonych. Rezultaty tych badań zostały opublikowane w czasopiśmie Communications Earth & Environment (https://doi.org/10.1038/s43247-024-01697-w) i stanowiły podstawę założeń do stworzenia projektu MARIVEL, finansowanego przez Narodowe Centrum Nauki w ramach programu OPUS.

Bogaty program naukowy, w połączeniu z sesjami posterowymi, sprzyjał nawiązywaniu kontaktów, dyskusjom i wymianie doświadczeń — równie gorących, jak fala upałów, która nawiedziła Genewę podczas konferencji.

As hot in Switzerland as inside the Volcano– IAVCEI Scientific Assembly ’25

The international conference organized by the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior (IAVCEI) brought together a wide range of scientists to the shores of Lake Geneva. From June 29 to July 4, they gathered at the University of Geneva to present their findings on volcanic activity. The theme of the conference — “The energies of magma: From volcanic eruptions and mineral resources to geothermal production and sustainability” — emphasized an interdisciplinary approach, combining research on volcanic eruptions with the potential utilization of volcanic-related resources.

The program included numerous scientific and poster sessions featuring cutting-edge research on magmatic system dynamics, modeling of pyroclastic flows, volcanic monitoring, and other key issues related to magmatic and volcanic activity. Among the broad range of topics, a planetary session titled “Volcanism across the Solar System” focused on research concerning volcanic processes on other celestial bodies.

During this session, Dr. Eng. Bartosz Pieterek presented a poster highlighting emerging results that document the presence of spatter ramparts in the Tharsis volcanic province on Mars. These features were formed during late Amazonian volcanic activity, attributed to mildly explosive eruptions from distributed volcanoes. The results were recently published in Communications Earth & Environment (https://doi.org/10.1038/s43247-024-01697-w), and served as the foundation and inspiration for the MARIVEL project, which has received funding under the OPUS program of the National Science Center of Poland. The rich scientific programme, combined with poster sessions, encouraged networking, discussions, and the exchange of experiences — all as intense as the heat wave that struck Geneva during the conference.
