Czy na Marsie mogły istnieć eksplodujące wulkany jeszcze w stosunkowo niedawnej historii planety? Zespół projektu MARIVEL, finansowanego przez Narodowe Centrum Nauki, właśnie dostarczył na to fascynujące dowody!

W najnowszej publikacji opublikowanej w czasopiśmie Icarus, pt.

“Late Amazonian-aged volcanic cones of explosive origin in Ceraunius Fossae, Tharsis”, naukowcy opisują stożki wulkaniczne o eksplozywnym charakterze, odkryte w regionie Ceraunius Fossae w północnej części wielkiej prowincji wulkanicznej Tharsis.

Dzięki analizie zdjęć o wysokiej rozdzielczości z kamery HiRISE na pokładzie sondy Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, badacze zidentyfikowali stożki bryzgowe (spatter cones) – struktury powstające, gdy gorąca lawa wyrzucana jest do atmosfery i spada z powrotem w postaci rozżarzonych fragmentów, budując wokół krateru charakterystyczne stożkowate formy. Na stokach tych form udało się także rozpoznać bomby wulkaniczne – duże fragmenty lawy wyrzucone podczas erupcji, które zastygły w locie.

Sama identyfikacja tych struktur to dopiero początek. Zespół MARIVEL wykorzystał opracowany model balistyczny trajektorii erupcji, aby na podstawie rozmiarów i rozmieszczenia bomb wulkanicznych oszacować parametry erupcji – takie jak prędkość wyrzutu materiału oraz wysokość wyrzuconego materiału podczas erupcji.

Połączenie obserwacji satelitarnych z modelowaniem fizycznym okazało się kluczem do zrozumienia dynamiki dawnych erupcji wulkanicznych na Marsie. Takie podejście pozwala naukowcom „cofnąć się w czasie” i zrekonstruować przebieg procesów, które kształtowały powierzchnię Czerwonej Planety.

At the edge of disciplines – planetary geology and volcanology at the Institute of Geology AMU

Could exploding volcanoes have existed on Mars in the planet’s relatively recent history? The MARIVEL project team, funded by the National Science Centre, has just provided fascinating evidence for this!

In their latest publication in the Icarus journal, entitled

“Late Amazonian-aged volcanic cones of explosive origin in Ceraunius Fossae, Tharsis” the scientists describe explosive volcanic cones discovered in the Ceraunius Fossae region in the northern part of the largest Martian volcanic province, Tharsis.

By analyzing high-resolution images from the HiRISE camera aboard the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, researchers have identified spatter cones – structures formed when hot lava is ejected into the atmosphere and falls back in the form of incandescent fragments, building characteristic conical shapes around the volcanic crater. Volcanic bombs – large fragments of lava ejected during the eruption, which solidified in flight – were also identified on the slopes of these shapes.

The identification of these structures is only the beginning. The MARIVEL team used a developed ballistic model of the eruption trajectory to estimate the parameters of the eruption, such as the ejection velocity and height of the ejected material during the eruption, based on the size and distribution of the volcanic bombs.

The combination of satellite observations and physical modeling has proven to be the key to understanding the dynamics of ancient volcanic eruptions on Mars. This approach allows scientists to “go back in time” and reconstruct the processes that shaped the surface of the Red Planet.
