Research Visits in June

W czerwcu kierownik projektu odbył dwie wizyty badawcze, które stanowiły ważny krok w umacnianiu współpracy naukowej.

9 czerwca 2026 r. odwiedził Wydział Budownictwa Lądowego Politechniki Wrocławskiej, a 16 czerwca 2026 r. Wydział Nauk o Morzu i Środowisku Uniwersytetu Szczecińskiego. Spotkania pozwoliły podtrzymać i rozwinąć dotychczasową współpracę z partnerami naukowymi oraz omówić kierunki przyszłych wspólnych badań.

Szczególnie owocna okazała się wizyta w Szczecinie – podczas niej udało się sfinalizować i przesłać do czasopisma SoftwareX manuskrypt opisujący nową wersję kodu Marscone.

Wierzymy, że zacieśnianie współpracy między ośrodkami naukowymi zaowocuje kolejnymi projektami oraz wieloma interesującymi wynikami badań. Trzymamy kciuki za pozytywne recenzje i kolejne wspólne sukcesy!

Research Visits in June

In June, the MARIVEL’s PI made two research visits, which marked an important step in strengthening scientific cooperation.

On June 9, 2026, he visited the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Wrocław University of Technology, and on June 16, 2026, the Faculty of Marine and Environmental Sciences at the University of Szczecin. The meetings allowed him to maintain and develop existing cooperation with scientific partners and discuss directions for future joint research.

The visit to Szczecin proved particularly fruitful—during the visit, we were able to finalize and submit a manuscript describing a new version of the Marscone code to the journal SoftwareX.

We believe that strengthening cooperation between research centers will lead to further projects and many interesting research results. We’re keeping our fingers crossed for positive reviews and more joint successes!

Udział zespołu MARIVEL – projektu finansowanego przez Narodowe Centrum Nauki – w EGU General Assembly 2026 w Wiedniu był ważnym elementem upowszechniania wyników badań oraz promocji projektu na arenie międzynarodowej.

W programie konferencji znalazły się wystąpienia członków zespołu: poster Bartosza Pieterka pt. „When lava meets ice: Explosive eruptions in the late Amazonian in Tharsis, Mars” oraz prezentacja w formacie PICO Thomasa Jonesa pt. „Secondary pyroclastic cones created by syn-eruptive wind”. Wystąpienie Bartosza Pieterka promowało niedawno opublikowaną pracę dotyczącą erupcji freatomagmowych na Marsie, która ukazała się na łamach npj Space Exploration.

Obie formy prezentacji – poster oraz PICO – umożliwiły bezpośrednią dyskusję z uczestnikami konferencji, sprzyjając wymianie wiedzy i doświadczeń. Udział w wydarzeniu był również okazją do nawiązywania nowych kontaktów oraz rozwijania współpracy międzynarodowej, co stanowi istotny element realizacji projektu MARIVEL.

MARIVEL Team at the EGU General Assembly 2026 in Vienna

The participation of the MARIVEL team—a project funded by the National Science Centre—at the EGU General Assembly 2026 in Vienna was an important step in disseminating research results and promoting the project on the international stage.

The conference program included presentations by team members: a poster by Bartosz Pieterek titled “When lava meets ice: Explosive eruptions in the late Amazonian in Tharsis, Mars” and a PICO presentation by Thomas Jones titled “Secondary pyroclastic cones created by syn-eruptive wind”. Bartosz Pieterek’s presentation promoted a recently published paper on phreatomagmatic eruptions on Mars, which appeared in npj Space Exploration.

Both presentation formats—posters and PICO—facilitated direct discussion with conference participants, fostering the exchange of knowledge and experiences. Participation in the event also provided an opportunity to establish new contacts and develop international cooperation, which is a key component of the MARIVEL project.

28 kwietnia, w ramach posiedzeń naukowych Instytutu Nauk Geologicznych Uniwersytetu Wrocławskiego, odbyło się wystąpienie kierownika projektu MARIVEL, stanowiące część działań upowszechniających wyniki badań oraz wzmacniających współpracę między ośrodkami naukowymi w Polsce. Wykład pt. „Geologia Marsa – przyszłość badań planetarnych oraz potencjał badawczy Instytutu Geologii UAM” przybliżył uczestnikom aktualny stan wiedzy o ewolucji Czerwonej Planety, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem procesów wulkanicznych.

W trakcie prezentacji omówiono geologię Marsa, koncentrując się na ewolucji wulkanizmu oraz badaniach małoskalowych form wulkanicznych, które stanowią ważny klucz do rekonstrukcji historii  magmowej planety. Zaprezentowano także wyniki uzyskane w ramach projektu MARIVEL, podkreślając jego interdyscyplinarny charakter – łączący podejścia z zakresu geologii, geochemii, geofizyki oraz analiz planetarnych, a także wykorzystujący dane z misji satelitarnych i badań analogów ziemskich.

Wystąpienie było również okazją do promocji potencjału badawczego Instytutu Geologii Uniwersytetu im. Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu oraz samego projektu MARIVEL w innym ośrodku naukowym. Podkreślono możliwości współpracy międzyinstytucjonalnej i zachęcano do wspólnego rozwijania badań w obszarze nauk planetarnych. W wyjeździe uczestniczył dyrektor Instytutu Geologii UAM, dr Robert Jagodziński, co dodatkowo podkreśliło rangę wydarzenia i znaczenie budowania relacji naukowych między ośrodkami.

Red Planet at a Meeting of the Institute of Geological Sciences at the University of Wrocław

On April 28, as part of the scientific meetings of the Institute of Geological Sciences at the University of Wrocław, the MARIVEL project leader gave a presentation, which was part of efforts to disseminate research findings and strengthen cooperation among research centers in Poland. The lecture titled “The Geology of Mars – The Future of Planetary Research and the Research Potential of the Institute of Geology at Adam Mickiewicz University” provided participants with an overview of the current state of knowledge regarding the evolution of the Red Planet, with a particular focus on volcanic processes.

During the presentation, the geology of Mars was discussed, focusing on the evolution of volcanism and the study of small-scale volcanic features, which are a key to reconstructing the magmatic history of the planet. The results obtained within the MARIVEL project were also presented, highlighting its interdisciplinary nature—combining approaches from geology, geochemistry, geophysics, and planetary analysis, as well as utilizing data from satellite missions and studies of terrestrial analogs.

The presentation also served as an opportunity to promote the research potential of the Institute of Geology at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań and the MARIVEL project itself at another research center. Opportunities for inter-institutional collaboration were highlighted, and participants were encouraged to jointly advance research in the field of planetary sciences. The trip was attended by the director of the Institute of Geology at Adam Mickiewicz University, Dr. Robert Jagodziński, which further underscored the significance of the event and the importance of building relationships.
