When the Sun reaches Poland: the aurora borealis near Poznań
W nocy z 19 na 20 stycznia 2026 roku, w godzinach 22:00–23:00, w okolicach Poznania zaobserwowano zorzę polarną – zjawisko niezwykle rzadkie na tej szerokości geograficznej. Zdjęcia wykonane tej nocy dokumentują delikatne, ale wyraźne struktury świetlne widoczne nisko nad północnym horyzontem.
Pojawienie się zorzy w środkowej Polsce było możliwe dzięki bardzo silnej aktywności Słońca, związanej z maksimum 25. cyklu aktywności słonecznej. Intensywne rozbłyski i koronalne wyrzuty masy ze Słońca doprowadziły do zaburzeń ziemskiej magnetosfery, umożliwiając dotarcie zjawiska daleko poza obszary polarne.
Takie wydarzenia są nie tylko widowiskowe, ale również niezwykle inspirujące – potrafią na chwilę oderwać nawet od pracy naukowej i analiz prowadzonych w ramach projektu MARIVEL, przypominając, że badane procesy kosmiczne rozgrywają się także nad naszymi głowami.
When the Sun reaches Poland: the aurora borealis near Poznań
On the night of January 19-20, 2026, between 10:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m., the aurora borealis was observed near Poznań – an extremely rare phenomenon at this latitude. The photos taken that night document delicate but distinct light structures visible low above the northern horizon.
The appearance of the aurora in central Poland was possible thanks to the very strong activity of the Sun, associated with the maximum of the 25th solar activity cycle. Intense flares and coronal mass ejections from the Sun led to disturbances in the Earth’s magnetosphere, allowing the phenomenon to reach far beyond the polar regions.
Such events are not only spectacular, but also extremely inspiring – they can even distract us for a moment from the scientific work and analyses carried out as part of the MARIVEL project, reminding us that the cosmic processes we are studying also take place above our heads.
